Son Goku (better known as Goku in the united states) is the main character throughout the Dragonball series. He was born a saiyan and his original name was Kakarotto. Saiyans are very well known for their fighting capabilities in space as well as conquering other planets. Goku has starred in most of the episodes, films, and specials of the anime series Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT, as well as many of the spin-off video games.
After his birth, Goku is sent from his home, Planet Vegeta, to Earth to prepare for sale on the intergalactic market by destroying all life forms. An injury to his head causes him severe amnesia, and Goku forgets what he was sent to do. Instead, he focuses on becoming stronger for the fun of it.
Goku first appeared in the first episode of Dragonball where he was seen as a 5 year old boy with a monkey tail and surviving alone in a secluded area. He has in his possession one of the seven Dragonballs. When all seven of the said Dragonballs are collected, it is said that a Dragon will appear and would grant one wish to anyone who collected the Dragonballs. Goku guarded he ball with his life as he initially thought that the Dragonball that he possesses was his grandfather, who had passed away. His grandfather, Gohan, discovered Goku in a spaceship when he crashed into earth. Goku’s tail is also not for decorative purposes as Goku will evolve into an Ape like beast with enormous powers during a full moon. Goku once transformed into that beast and unfortunately stepped on his grandfather, which led to his grandfather’s demise.
In the beginning of the series, Goku meets a very smart 16-year-old teenage girl named Bulma, the desert bandit Yamcha, and two shapeshifters named Oolong and Puar. He also meets one of his closest friends, Krillin, and others during his training. Participating in various martial arts tournaments, Goku also battles other famous DBZ characters such as Tien Shinhan and Chiaotzu.

Outside of the Dragon Ball franchise, Goku has had cameo appearances in Toriyama’s self-parody series Neko Majin Z. He has also been the subject of other parodies, and has appeared in various special events and in American pop culture.
